Mason Caradice Design
The Brief
In this module i had the opportunity to demonstrate and pursue a preference for a particular aspect of design. I chose one option from the two on offer and followed a series of taught sessions designed to increase my skill base in that particular area of design. It is the aim of this module to both broaden and deepen not only my understanding, but my capability within design which in turn will give me confidence as well as new ‘tools’ and experiences which we hope you will apply to future design projects.
The choice of the two briefs was a digital brief with a more digital approach to the developmnet and design of a concept or a physical approach with a more hands on approach to the development and design of a concept through a number of models and work withing the workshop. I Chose the digital brief as i would like to broaden my understanding and skills within this area.
Background
Technology continues to increasingly affect more and more aspects of our everyday lives.
The sophistication and power of digital tools and systems available is constantly rising. In
this digital age (some would argue we are already ‘post digital’), integration of the digital /
virtual into the real is happening seamlessly.
As designers, it is paramount that we understand the possibilities of the technologies
available to us, and how we might harness their potential. Digital tools enable us to visualise
and model forms without the constraints of physical materials. While I am not advocating
them in any way as replacement for physical modelling, there are situations where there are
clear advantages. And as with any tool or machine we should be able to select and use
appropriate tools appropriately considering the problem that we are faced with.
Brief
At the end of my final year it is probable that some students will be interested in and have the
opportunity to exhibit their design work at the New Designers graduate showcase in London.
It is also likely that you wont have been to the space before i take on this opportunity.
The format of the exhibition is such that each college / university is allocated an empty space
comprising of Xm2 floor area and some blank walls. To stand out the design work on show
needs presenting in an eye-catching manner. Plinths and display stands need to not only
display the work effectively, but be relatively simple to erect, dismantle and transport.
i have a task to design the exhibition stand ‘furniture’ so that there is a coordinated and
uniform appearance.
I am required to use digital tools to make an accurate visualisation of the space. I am
also asked to consider the construction, through the specification of component parts, and
production of technical drawings. In the latter stages of this project i will have the
opportunity to realise my digital models through physical output methods.
