Mason Caradice Design
In my first lesson of the project we was asked to take the map/dimensions of the area that is allocated in the exhibition and model it out to the correct scale using 3ds max. I firstly changed and setup the units i wanted to use which is metric measurments and either centimeters or millimeters. I then edited the picture in photoshop and changed the size of the image to a scaled sizes by changing the dimension in pixels to the corect dimension if it would be in mm/cm. I then added the image to a plane what was the exact same size as the image so it did not get distorted.
Initial Concepts
I Then added the walls and floor to the pan. The wall and floor space where created to the correct measurments and the placed over its location on the map to ensure it was the correct size and was in the correct place.
With a little bit of time left we was the asked to create a few crude designs of plinths and put them within the scene on 3ds max. The designs where crude but give me an idea of the space avalable and what the space could be used forwithin the allocated area.
For the second lesson of the project we was asked to look at existing portfolio stands and within the 3 hour lesson create a model on 3ds max of a stand. While looking online at the existing stands i got the feeling that most where too old fasioned or didnt look good. So i decided to design a modern and clean designed stand.
With some time still left i then developed the stand as i thought of how it could be made and made me thought that it would be to heavy and big to transport around. The design of the legs stayed the same but i added two points were the portfolio holder can be placed in. This then allows the stand to be easier to transport around as it breaks down into two pieces and loses alot of weight as the new holder would be made from plastic instead of metal.
This is my design of the stand and i believe that it is a modern and clean design originaly it would all be made from metal with the black metal rod holding the stand together. The legs of the stand would be chrome to give it a modern finish.

The initial ideas a quite crude, this is because i there doesnt need to be much detail in the intial ideas as i am experimenting and creating with the overall forms of the concepts and not refining them at this point. From my initial sketches i choose two ideas to carry on through to develop. Before developing the choosen ideas i also created a 3d model to give me a more precise idea and better understanding of the initial ideas.
