Introduction

Given Brief

This module is the first opportunity on the course for you to fully control the direction of a design project. Up until now you have been issued with design briefs, and although these have gradually become more vague and open to interpretation enabling you to write your own brief within them, the starting point has still be supplied to you. This is therefore a key step to take, on the way to becoming an independent practitioner. The project comes at a point exactly half way through the course, a good time to reflect on your progress so far, what you have enjoyed, what you would like to do more of, what skills you would like to improve upon, what areas within design would you like to explore further.... You are being given the opportunity to take control of your direction so it is important to make meaningful decisions about the work you would like to undertake. For some, this is possibly a point in the course which can’t come soon enough, and you are itching to put ideas into practice. For others, the pressure of having to decide your own project parameters and write your own brief may be slightly intimidating and daunting. We recognise this and our role as your tutors is to guide you through the process of generating your project brief, and subsequent project phases. The module fits into the course design such that it is a scaled down version of your final year graduate project. It is a time to take risks and push yourself, probably making many mistakes along the way, which is both integral to the learning process and to the improvement of your design work.

Background

During my holidays after the first year of university i started working for a vacuum forming company called the "vac form group". Most of my time spent working was on the factory floor manufacturing the product but i have had some experience in the desinging and tool desing side of the company. During my time there i have took particular interest in designing for manufacture and my interest and knowledge is ever growing with the experience i have gained while working there. With my interest in designing for manufacture getting greater i wanted to do this project on something that can be produced within my work to show my capabilities in designing for a certain manufacturing technique. The company produces products for a number of different manufactures around the world and also has its own product range. The products are called decksavers, which are polycarbonate covers which protect and prolong the life of various dj'ing equipment. But they do have some gaps as they do not produce or sell cases for headphone. Headphones are essential to djs and other music producers and i believe a case would be a great addition to their product range. i believe his will be a great market as most current headphone cases are not as protective as they should be with most being unprotective and acting just like a bag. With headphones becoming ever more popular and popular with many people buying the best ones to show off to others this would also be great for the general public that also wish to protect their headphones.

Brief

The product will be a case to protect headphones. The case will house the headphones while they are not in use and being carrier and transported around to ensure they are not damaged in any way. Headphones are vital to the music industry and with most headphone being using by serious dj and musicians costing usually well over £150 it is vital to keep them in good working order. The product will be clear or smoked (tinted) as this will be unique and allows the user to show off their headphones as people in the music industry like to show off, be the best and have the best equiptment, so being transparent it will allow them to show this. the product should shut securely and should have a classy/modern look and finish too it.the case will be designed to house the industry standard sennheiser hd25 ii which are one of the best, most popular, most used and best selling headphones in the music industry. The case should be as little and minimal in size as possible as the case will be carried around in bags and cases between proformances or while not in use. A handle is not essentail as many people in the music industry do not carry the cases around individually as it is placed in bags or cases while on the move. The case should address the issues that most current cases have with the most popular being that they are not strong enough for their purpose and the ones that do offer some protection are too bulky
